Tributes have been paid to an ‘exceptional’ Scots woman who died following a horror avalanche accident in Argentina.

Andrea Marshall was out skiing with two friends in the Andes mountains near the Patagonian city of Bariloche when she was buried under snow and rocks. Her body was found around 11pm local time on Wednesday after a search and rescue operation lasting several hours which continued into Thursday morning.

The 27-year-old was a former student at Glasgow Caledonian University. She was the treasurer of the Snowsports Club and president of the Equestrian Club. The University described her as a ‘dedicated student’.

A spokesperson told STV News: “The thoughts of everyone at Glasgow Caledonian University are with Andrea’s family and friends at this desperately sad time.

“Andrea was an extremely dedicated student and received an award from our Students’ Association for her exceptional contribution to student life during her time with us.”

Her former school, Dunoon Grammar School, where she was deputy head girl, said she was ‘a ray of sunshine’.

They said: “Andrea was a very outgoing girl with a lovely nature. She was talented and was described by her former teacher as a ray of sunshine.

“She had loads of friends and was very easy to get on with, and took time to come back to the school and deliver a talk to pupils who had an interest in business.”

She posted regularly on Instagram video and photos of her skiing and rock climbing. The avalanche risk when Andrea and her colleagues went out on Wednesday is said to have been “considerable”.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Argentina and are in contact with the local authorities.”
