LEANDER, Texas — Leander ISD marked the opening of its 30th elementary school on Saturday.

District officials, staff and families attended a ribbon-cutting and interactive activities at Donald Lewis Hisle Elementary.

Hisle served 23 years on the Leander ISD school board and was the 12th-longest serving school board member in Texas history.

“He just loved it,” said daughter Nicole Hisle. “He never met a stranger, and he just enjoyed being around the kids.”

Donald Lewis Hisle passed away in November 2023.

“Daddy was so humble, and he would always say, ‘Oh, it’s no big deal,’ but I know deep down in his heart, he would just be smiling ear to ear,” said daughter Nicole Hisle when asked what her dad would think about Saturday’s event. “He would be shaking hands and seeing all these people.”

Nicole Hisle said she and her family are proud to have her father’s legacy live on through the students and staff.

“I know my dad would be beyond proud of this accomplishment,” said Nicole. “By any means, he wasn’t out for the accolades. It just was his true heart in wanting to help the kids get the best that they could.”

Nicole Hisle also praised the school’s innovative design, which she and district officials say is meant to create community among students.
