LAKEWOOD, Wash. (Gray News) – A 3-year-old boy fell into a sewer Sunday afternoon and died, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives were told the 3-year-old and his 4-year-old brother were playing in the backyard with a 6-year-old neighbor at the time, and an adult was in and out of the house with them.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the 3-year-old removed the lid to the neighbor’s septic tank and fell in.

His brother told his grandmother what happened, and she called 911 around 2:15 p.m.

Emergency crews removed the boy from the septic tank around 3 p.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
