Adrian Newey’s hotly anticipated move to Aston Martin makes him one of Britain’s most paid sportsmen – with wages that nearly match Sir Lewis Hamilton’s.

Aston Martin officially announced the signing of the legendary Formula One car designer on Tuesday in a huge coup for the team.

Newey, who announced he would be leaving Red Bull after 18 years earlier this season, has designed cars that have won a total of 13 drivers’ championships and 12 constructors’ championships.

Having bought success to Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is confident that the 65-year-old can make his team a title contender.

He will officially start work at the British team in March 2025, with the job title of Managing Technical Partner.

How much is Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin salary?

Stroll has spared no expense in order to land one of the best minds the sport has ever seen, with BBC Sport reporting that Newey has penned a five-year contract with the team.

According to Sky Sports, he will earn a .

Additionally, Newey will become a minority shareholder of Aston Martin, with team said to be worth over £1.1billion.

That salary would see him earn more money than all but two of the drivers on the 2024 grid, namely Max Verstappen and Hamilton.

Though sources differ, three-time reigning champion Verstappen is said to be F1’s highest paid driver right now on around £42.1m, with Hamilton on £34.4m.

These are believed to be just their base salary however, with millions in bonuses paid at the end of the year based on results. Verstappen was reportedly paid £53.5m total for his record-breaking 2023 season.

Newey’s salary also far exceeds that of Aston Martin’s two drivers. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso earns £13.7m, while teammate Lance Stroll, son of Lawrence, is on £2.2m.

It should be noted that this data is from before the start of the 2024 season, and since then almost every driver on the grid has agreed fresh terms or agreed a move to a new team for 2025.

This includes Hamilton who is likely to get a salary increase at Ferrari and the man he’s replacing Carlos Sainz who has almost certainly taken a wage cut in order to secure a switch to Williams.

Both Alonso and Stroll signed new contracts with Aston Martin earlier this year, and Newey confirmed it is a dream come true to work with the Spaniard: ‘We’ve battled against each other for so many years. He’s been a bit of kind of arch-enemy at times.

‘We came so close to him joining Red Bull in 2008 for the 2009 season but unfortunately it didn’t quite happen, which is a great shame. So we continued to battle against each other.

‘He’s a legend of the sport so very much looking forward to working with him.’
