The day before 35-year-old TikToker and avid runner Bobby “Caleb” Graves died upon completing the Disney half marathon on Sunday, he posted a now-haunting video expressing trepidation about the heat.
“The Disneyland half marathon — the Halloween Half Marathon — is tomorrow, and I’m marginally worried now,” he began in a clip to his 20,000-plus followers.
He said he walked his dog at around 2 p.m. the day before, “probably the hottest part of the day,” with temperatures in the 90s.
“I have some susceptibility, I don’t know if it’s temporary or long-term, to heat,” he said, explaining that it felt different than the Texas heat he’d grown up with.
“I was outside for like 20 minutes, walking my dog, and it was hot, but I felt fine,” he continued. “Then like 10 minutes after I got back in, I just passed out. Fell asleep. No control over my body. It was heat exhaustion.”

It alarmed him enough to make him wonder how he would “get through” the next day’s early-morning race, but not enough to deter him from running.
In the caption of another video of him picking up his race number, he wished other runners luck, writing, “Stay hydrated and listen to your body.”

Get through it he did, but right after he crossed the finish line around 7 a.m., his own luck ran out.
“As soon as he crossed the finish line, he started grabbing his chest,” Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter told People. “One of the workers noticed and ran up to him and caught him before he collapsed.”
The medics on hand for the race began working on Graves immediately and kept at it for an hour, Sutter said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The runner and litigation associate had no known medical conditions prior to the race, Sutter told the Los Angeles Times.
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department is currently investigating. It’s not yet clear whether heat was a factor, though L.A.-area temperatures climbed into the triple digits in Southern California’s current heat wave.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and our hearts are with Caleb’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Disneyland Resort spokesperson Jessica Good told Entertainment Weekly.
