An East Kilbride woman has been inspired by her niece to hit new heights for a Scottish disability charity.

Laura MacGregor has taken to the sky over Glasgow’s River Clyde to raise money for a cause that is very close to her heart.

The 33-year-old took part in specialist disability charity Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus (SBH) Scotland’s Zipslide the Clyde event with her daughter Leah on Sunday, September 1.

Laura was inspired to take part in Zipslide the Clyde to raise money for SBH Scotland in honour of her five-year-old niece Amber who has spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Laura’s sister Leanne and her niece Amber, also live in East Kilbride, and have been supported by SBH Scotland since Amber was born.

Laura has seen first-hand the impact of SBH Scotland’s work in building supportive communities for parents and creating lifelong friendships for children.

A dedicated support and clinical team offer a wide range of support and wellbeing services to all those affected by the life long, complex disabilities of spina bifida and hydrocephalus across Scotland.

Laura said: “SBH Scotland has supported my niece Amber since she was born so I have seen first-hand the important impact their support and groups have on families dealing with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

“The support SBH Scotland has given to my family is so appreciated and I wanted to give something back. Taking part in Zipslide the Clyde was such a great experience and I know that the money raised will enable SBH Scotland to support more children and families across South Lanarkshire and beyond.

“I had great fun on the day, and it was amazing to have Amber there cheering me on!”

Zipslide the Clyde offers a unique and thrilling way to see Glasgow’s cityscape.

The challenge sees participants launched off from a crane next to the Riverside Museum from an exhilarating 100ft high for an 1245ft long adventure over the famous Clyde.

Deborah Roe, Director of Fundraising at SBH Scotland, added: “Thank you to Laura and all the participants who took part in our Zipslide the Clyde event! It has been a massive success which will have raised a whopping £163,000 by the end of September!

“The event will continue making families, affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus, unstoppable in life.

“As a charity, we need to raise £1.4 million each year to be able to continue to offer services and support that our members like Leanne and Amber rely on, such as social groups, health and wellbeing clinics, intensive support for new babies or family outings.

“Events like Zipslide the Clyde are crucial in helping us reach this target and we want to thank everyone who has donated and supported SBH Scotland. Thank you.”
