MARBLE FALLS, Texas (KSAT) – A group of Junior ROTC students in Texas came to the rescue after a school resource officer accidentally shot and injured himself hours before a football game.
Police say the firearm of a Marble Falls High School school resource officer accidentally discharged while he was seated, injuring his leg. The incident happened just before 6 p.m. Friday on school property by the visitor parking area.
Jonathon Huerta, Ethan and Josiah, all Brackenridge High School Junior ROTC students, were in the area at the time and jumped in to help the officer.
“We asked if he was OK, and he was like, ‘Oh no, my gun went off. I’m shot,’” Josiah said.
“At the moment, I felt terrified, like an adrenaline rush,” Ethan said.
Despite their fear, the high schoolers, who are 14, 16 and 17 years old, helped put a tourniquet on the officer’s leg before calling 911.
“While he was doing it tight, I was trying to help him tighten it because the tighter, the better,” Huerta said.
The students say the tourniquet worked quickly, and after a 1.5-minute call to 911, first responders were on the way. The officer was then taken to a hospital by helicopter.
The teenagers say they hope the officer and his family are doing OK, and they want a solid life lesson to come from this situation.
“I feel like basic first aid should be taught for anyone from middle school to high school range,” Josiah said.
Officials say the officer’s injury was non-life threatening.
