Keeping on top of the housework can be a challenging feat, especially if you live a very busy lifestyle. Because of this, there are certain areas and tasks that can often be overlooked.

This is especially true where the bathroom is concerned. Although these rooms are often smaller than others, there are a couple of hard-to-spot areas that often don’t get the attention they deserve when it comes to cleaning.

However, according to experts, you could be putting yourself at risk by neglecting these – and you’re probably guilty of doing so.

Henry Maia, Vice President at Mineral Tiles, understands that it’s all too easy to leave out important parts of bathroom cleaning that we should actually be prioritising.

“Bathrooms are used by all the family, and in a typical household they are used a lot. Sheer use alone tends to create hygiene issues that can be tough to combat, but bathrooms are uniquely damp places, which may lead to mould and bacteria growth,” he said.

“Mould can stimulate and trigger allergies, which can be major health issues, and of course bacteria actually spread and are the cause of serious disease. Being extremely thorough, then, is incredibly important when it comes to bathroom cleaning. But most people aren’t as thorough as they need to be,” he continues.

Here’s a list of the main areas in your bathroom, and where you could be forgetting to clean them.

Toilet

Cleaning under the seat and around the toilet base on the floor is vital. The flusher handle should also be cleaned regularly because people touch it every time they flush, and that’s one of the ways germs spread.

The rim in the bowl where the flush water comes out should be sprayed regularly with a powerful anti-bacterial, too – since bacteria love all those damp dark places where we rarely go.

Shower and bath

Showers and baths get wet a lot and stay wet for a long time, so they are therefore top breeding grounds for mould and bacteria.

Blast the corners of your shower or bath regularly – every time you wash, ideally – with anti-mould or antibacterial spray, and use a brush to make sure that spray does the best job it can.

Sink

Similar to the bath, wash basins get wet a lot and take a while to dry, so this is the ideal place for mould and bacteria to thrive.

That means under the bowl where you tend not to look much, around the mouth of the plug, and even on the underside of the plug. Mould and bacteria build up quickly in such places if they aren’t sanitised frequently.

Tiles

Grouting needs to be sanitised frequently as mould and bacteria tend to flourish there. This is because when wiping tiles clean, cloths tend not to go into the grout gaps between tiles.

Use a brush and an anti-bacterial and anti-mould spray to clean the grouting even more thoroughly than the tiles.
