A sight loss support group has received a welcome donation of nearly £1000 in memory of a former volunteer and well-known Lanark community stalwart.

Members of the town’s Macular Society support group, launched last year, were presented with the bumper cheque from funds which had been raised by a previous similar group led by popular local woman Greta Steven.

Greta, who died in 2021 and whose vision had been affected by macular disease, was described as an “avid volunteer” and tributes were paid to her contribution to the sight charity and to local organisations at the afternoon tea presentation.

Lanark group volunteer Mary-Ann Patrick, who attended the special event at the Tea Time cafe on Hyndford Road, said: “The donation came from money left in people’s wills for the old group, or money left over from grants.

“It was all saved up and had never been spent, so we wanted to give it back to the new group. It was such a lovely afternoon and nice to do this in Greta’s memory.

“She was a lovely person – Greta would do anything for anyone and nothing was too much trouble. She was involved in numerous local groups, not just macular support, and was really stuck into volunteering.”

The relaunched Lanark support group, part of national sight loss charity The Macular Society, meets monthly to help people living with macular disease and other vision conditions for participants to hear from guest speakers, gain information, encouragement and socialise with others.

Macular Society regional manager Aoife Mooney said: “It was an honour to remember Greta’s impact on the local community and what she helped to do for people with sight loss.

“Everyone had a fantastic time at the presentation event, and this donation will be so important to ensuring we can be there to support people with macular disease both now and in the future.”
