Manchester United considered signing Ivan Toney during the summer transfer window before ‘ruling out’ a deal due to Erik ten Hag’s concerns, according to reports.
Ten Hag made it clear towards the end of last season that he wanted to bolster his attacking options over the summer, with United meeting his demand by signing his compatriot Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in July.
The Manchester giants were linked with a move for England international Toney before and after Zirkzee’s arrival at Old Trafford but ended up pulling out of the race.
Toney also attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal over the summer but ended up moving to the Saudi Pro League after Brentford accepted a £40m bid from Al Ahli.
The 28-year-old, who made a limited but crucial contribution for England during their run to the Euro 2024 final, opened his account for Al Ahli over the weekend, scoring twice in a 4-2 win over Damac.
But if it had not been for Ten Hag’s reservations, Toney could still be a Premier League player and featuring for Manchester United.
ESPN say United were interested in bringing Toney to Old Trafford but ‘ruled out’ a deal as Ten Hag, while impressed by the striker’s goalscoring ability, was concerned over his ability to press opponents with the energy he wants from his forwards.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank had hoped to keep Toney at the club but became increasingly resigned to his departure as he entered the final 12 months of his contract in west London.
Following Toney’s move to Saudi Arabia – in a staggering deal worth around £400,000-a-week – Frank said: ‘It’s been a pleasure to work with Ivan over the last four years.
‘He has averaged more than one goal every two games, which is an unbelievable number. He has been a fantastic goalscorer, link-up player and leader.
‘He has pushed the team, the squad and himself. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend.’
Toney, meanwhile, said after his emotional departure from Brentford: ‘Where do I even begin? It’s hard to find the right words to express what Brentford means to me.
‘From the moment I first stepped onto the pitch wearing the shirt, I knew I was part of something special.
‘My first and most important shout out is to “The Bees” simply the best and most incredible fans in the world. Together, we’ve shared unforgettable moments – highs, lows, challenges, and triumphs that will stay with me forever.
‘The love and support you’ve shown me through thick and thin is something I will remember for the rest of my life.
‘As I prepare to begin this new journey, I want to thank each and every one of you for your unconditional support.
‘To my teammates, the manager, the backroom staff, the owners, and again, a special mention to The Bees – thank you. As I always say – see you soon, it’s never a goodbye. Ivan.’
Manchester United have struggled in front of goal this season – finding the back of the net five times in five games. Zirkzee has one goal, which he scored on the opening day, and Rasmus Hojlund is still out injured.
