At a City Council hearing on Monday, city officials celebrated the trajectory of B-HEARD, a program to send teams of mental health professionals, social workers and EMTs, as opposed to NYPD officers, to mental health crises; the number of calls that these teams handled more than doubled from fiscal year 2023 to 2024.
