Choosing a baby name is just the beginning, as you may face another challenge – selecting the right spelling.

While certain names have one well-known spelling, others offer variations to choose from. Parents often debate which spellings to use for names like Reece or Rhys, Ciaran or Kieran, Sophia or Sofia.

Yet, one inventive mother-to-be has taken creative spellings to new lengths. According to a pal, dislike for the letter ‘C’ has driven the woman to plan naming her daughter Scarlett, but with a twist.

On Reddit, the friend shared how “Skarlett” was the initial alternative to circumvent the ‘C’. However, striving for further uniqueness, the expectant mum is now spelling it “Skarlytt”, substituting ‘E’ with ‘Y’.

Recounting the reveal, the friend concealed their concerns, saying: “I smiled and nodded when she told me but I was internally cringing. Her husband has no say and just does whatever she says. She’s very much the queen of her home. I’m not sure how to tell her that spelling is awful or if I even should.”

The unconventional spelling has stunned Reddit users, who had a range of insults for the name ranging from “awful” and “unappealing” to a complete “disaster”. Some commenters suggested the friend encourage a return to the traditional spelling.

One individual commented: “Scarlet/Scarlett is pretty. Skarlytt is a disaster and screams ego issues. Please for the love of god, somebody convince her to just go with the normal spelling. Scarlet is already unique enough.”

Another said: “It’s visually unappealing (read ugly but I’m trying to be nice) and seems pretentious in a silly way. Poor kid.”

A third also remarked: “I know a Scarlett and she’s lovely and has a nice name. Skarlett is visually unappealing. Skarlytt is even worse.”
