KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A search is underway Tuesday night for a suspect who crashed on the West Virginia State University campus in a stolen car, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

West Virginia State University Police had requested that everyone shelter in place on campus. That lockdown was lifted later Tuesday night after a search for the suspect didn’t turn anything up.

The incident started before 8 p.m. on Interstate 64 during a high-speed pursuit of a stolen car. Investigators say speeds on the interstate reached up to 110 mph.

Deputies say the driver exited at Dunbar, went through some residential areas, and then doubled back to West Virginia State University (WVSU) where the car crashed along Fairlawn Avenue and the suspect got out and ran.

The man is described as wearing a camouflage shirt and blue jeans. He was last seen in the area of Hamblin Hall on the WVSU campus and running toward the Kanawha River.

Deputies ended up towing the car but left campus after a search of the man didn’t turn anything up. K-9 units were involved in that search.
