WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than $10 million in federal grants has been secured for medical facility projects in Greenbrier and Summers counties.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito announced today that $7.5 million has been awarded to construct a state-of-the-art facility to house an on-site multispecialty physician practice at Greenbrier Medical Center (part of Charleston Area Medical Center) in Ronceverte.

Currently, the employed physicians supporting the hospital are not located on the campus of the hospital. The current rented locations are neither modern nor accessible and were not constructed to meet the needs of patients and providers.

The project will allow the center to expand medical services as well as establish a telemedicine hub.

In Hinton, $3 million has been earmarked to renovate and expand the emergency department at Summers Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital. The hospital treated more than 4,600 emergency cases in 2022; however, with 1,808 square feet of space the existing emergency department faces numerous challenges in accommodating patients.

The Summers County Commission will assist with this project.

Capito said the Congressionally Directed Spending grants through the Department of Health and Human Services help meet critical goals to expand medical services around the state.
