Passengers were sat on a flight for nine hours before landing at the same airport they took off from because of a problem with the toilets.

An American Airlines flight from Dallas to Incheon International Airport in Seoul was forced to turn around five hours into the journey on September 7.

They were on the flight for nine hours in total, with passenger Jimin Lee recording the commotion.

Posting the clip to Instagram, Jimin is enjoying a snack and a soft drink as the plane turns around.

She captioned the post: ‘New fear unlocked: Your flight to Korea may go five hours and come back with zero explanation.’

Jimin said the airline crew explained there was a problem with the toilets, with the pilot asking if there were any passengers carrying a screwdriver to help with the issue.

She said: ‘American Airlines needs a lesson in effective communication.’

The flight path shows the aircraft travelling across the US and part of the Pacific Ocean before it heads back.

The viral video then shows the flight landing back in Dallas, with the pilot confirmed there were ‘clear skies’ for landing.

Jimin said: ‘Nine hours later we’re back in Dallas. Lost for words.’

American Airlines said: ‘On September 7, American Airlines flight 281 with service from Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) to Seoul (ICN) returned to DFW due to a maintenance issue.

‘The flight landed safely and without incident at DFW, and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team.

‘We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we apologize for the inconvenience.’
