A convicted killer has chillingly admitted to the brutal murder and dismemberment of a woman whose body parts were discovered scattered across a field earlier this year.
Steven Sansom, 45, from Sutton, confessed at the Old Bailey today to the horrific murder of 38-year-old Sarah Mayhew, whose remains were found in Rowdown Fields, New Addington, on April 2.
Ms. Mayhew had last been seen alive on March 8, in Sutton, southwest London.
Sansom also pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by gruesomely dismembering Ms Mayhew’s body and disposing of her remains in various locations across the area.
He further admitted to meticulously cleaning the crime scene in an attempt to cover his tracks between March 7 and April 3 of this year.
Appearing via video link from the high-security HMP Belmarsh, Sansom, who was previously convicted of the 1999 murder of a London cab driver, wore glasses, a grey tracksuit, and a T-shirt, as he loudly proclaimed his guilt to the court.
The court also heard Sansom denied three charges of possessing indecent images of children, which Judge Mark Lucraft KC ruled would remain on file.
The gruesome discovery was made after a horrified dog walker’s pet uncovered a human bone in the New Addington field.
A police search followed, with more body parts, including arms, legs, and a head, found nearby. DNA analysis later confirmed the remains were those of Ms. Mayhew.
Gemma Watts, 49, of Featherbed Lane in New Addington, is also charged with murdering Ms Mayhew and perverting the course of justice. She was not asked to enter pleas when she appeared at the same hearing from HMP Bronzefield.
