WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Congressional members of the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump met for the first time on Thursday.
The lawmakers came together to hear from witnesses to learn more about how the July 13 attempt in Butler, Pa. happened.
“It’s the obligation of this Congress, this administration and public servants at all levels of government to stand against those who would use violence to interfere with our elections,” said Rep. Mike Kelly, (R-PA) the task force chairman.
Members of the task force questioned state and local law enforcement, a medical examiner and a former secret service agent.
Throughout the hearing, the lawmakers said that there were several fundamental failures on the day of the assassination attempt and emphasized the Secret Services’ faults.
“There is about seven different ways the Secret Service could have secured that building. A ten year old looking at that satellite image could have seen that the greatest threat posed to the president that day, outside the security perimeter, was the anger building and that roof,” said Rep. Pat Fallon, (R-TX).
“It is also clear, however, that the communication between the Secret Service and local and state partners was disjointed,” said Rep. Jason Crow, (D-CO).
The task force has already had several meetings with officials, has conducted interviews and received more than 2,800 pages of documents from the Secret Service.
They have until mid-December to issue a report on their findings and will make legislative recommendations.
