Hamilton Accies Women boss Robert Watson insists the pressure is all on Motherwell in Sunday’s Lanarkshire derby in the SWPL Cup.

The sides were regular rivals in the top flight until Accies were relegated at the end of last season, but they have been reunited in round two of the cup and Watson’s says his players are looking forward to the chance to cause an upset at K-Park in East Kilbride.

Watson, whose side are on a six-game unbeaten run at the top of SWPL2, said: “It is nice not to get one of the top three teams in the SWPL in a cup draw for a change. It is really exciting.

“You get relegated and you think that’s the derby days gone. At clubs like Hamilton and Motherwell, you play for these derby games.

“But the draw has been kind enough to give us that chance to go head-to-head again.

“It is a chance for us to cause an upset at the weekend. Motherwell finished top of the bottom six last season so it is going to be a huge task, but it is one we are really looking forward to.

“It is a free hit for us. The pressure and expectation is on Motherwell. We’ll give it our all and see where it takes us.”

Accies have shown in the past they are capable of stunning their neighbours, winning at Fir Park a couple of years ago and enjoying a 2-1 win at home last season in February.

Watson added: “We’ve done okay against them before. Although we lost the last game 4-2 [in May], we played really well that night and were unfortunate not to get anything out of that game with how well we played.

“If we win, we are looking at a quarter-final and at that point anything can happen.”
