MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) – A woman was arrested late Tuesday night in Madison, Wisconsin, after allegedly entering someone else’s home while they were away and cooking dinner for herself, police reported.
The Madison Police Department said the resident of the home in the 400 block of South Livingston Street returned around 10:30 p.m. to find the lights on. She was reportedly startled as she had been away from home all day.
After spotting someone inside walking around, the woman called police.
Police said when officers arrived, they witnessed a woman walking casually around the home.
Officers ordered her to come to the door. They say she went to the door and calmly told police that she had gotten permission to be inside the home from the resident, who she mentioned by name. Police said the suspect was inside the home long enough to inspect the mail, gather details about the resident and to cook herself a dinner of shrimp and pasta that did not belong to her.
In crafting a detailed story, the suspect allegedly told officers that she met the resident of the home at a coffee shop earlier in the day. The suspect claimed she had been given keys to the house.
The Madison Police Department did not share how the woman actually got into the home.
The resident insisted that she had never met the woman who was found inside, according to the police report, adding the alleged burglar did not have permission to be in her home and eating her food.
The suspect was arrested for alleged residential burglary and booked into the Dane County Jail.
