Experts are sounding the alarm for homeowners to inspect a particular spot in their homes to fend off pesky gnats currently swarming UK households. These nuisances – also known as fruit flies – are particularly drawn to the dampest areas of homes, such as near sinks and bathrooms.

Searches on Google for “how to get rid of gnats” have surged by 36%, with queries for “little flies in bathroom” soaring by an astonishing 71%. To combat these unwelcome guests, Alex Woods from Victorian Plumbing shares his top tips for making your home gnat-free.

The advice is straightforward but could make a difference. And one thing is key – keep the place clean.

1. Keep drains clean

Alex notes that gnats “thrive in moist environments, making kitchen and bathroom sinks prime targets,” reports the Express. In order to tackle this issue, he suggests: “Regularly clean your drains with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to keep them fresh.

“Be sure to remove any buildup of organic material, such as leftover food, from plugholes. Thoroughly dry your sink and drain after cleaning, as gnats are attracted to damp areas.”

2. Eliminate standing water

Gnats find standing water irresistible for laying eggs, so to prevent an infestation, it’s crucial to avoid leaving excess water in sinks or bathtubs. Alex suggests drying these areas well after use.

He continues: “Overwatered houseplants can also be a hotspot. Moisture buildup inside your home from broken pipes or blocked sinks is another issue, so it’s important to check for leaks and address any plumbing problems quickly to avoid water accumulation.”

3. Use natural deterrents

Alex advises: “Natural deterrents can be highly effective in keeping gnats at bay, essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint work well for repelling gnats – citronella candles are also a great option for deterring various pests. Try placing cotton balls soaked in essential oils near areas where gnats tend to gather.”

4. Maintain a dry environment

The expert notes that gnats thrive in specific environments, often found in homes. He explains: “Gnats prefer humid environments, so keeping your home dry can help to deter them. Use dehumidifiers in areas prone to moisture and ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens by opening windows. Since gnats are most active during the day, especially around mid-morning and dusk, keeping windows closed during these times can also help.”

5. Cleanliness is key

“Gnats are attracted to dirt, organic material, and moisture, so maintaining a clean home is key to keeping them away”, Alex said, adding: “Regular vacuuming removes food crumbs while dusting clears away dust and grime that can become breeding grounds for gnats.

“By decluttering your home and frequently cleaning high-traffic areas like kitchens, and bathrooms, you can greatly reduce the chances of a gnat infestation.”

By sticking to these suggestions, you can do your best to ensure a gnat-free home this autumn and beyond. Regular cleaning, adequate ventilation, and tackling areas prone to moisture will assist in keeping gnats at bay. Natural repellents and prompt repairs to leaks can also contribute significantly.
