BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (Gray News) – A couple driving from Tennessee to Virginia Friday narrowly escaped a landslide triggered by rains brought by Helene in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
Kelly and Alan Keffer’s car was hit by large rocks and mud, damaging the vehicle and shattering windows.
“Well as you can see by the mud on the door, inside, in the windows and the shattered back window, we narrowly escaped a landslide,” Kelly Keffer said.
They said the landslide started on the other side of the interstate from where they were driving, so they thought they could escape it but the mountain started sliding faster.
It lasted about a minute before they were able to make it out of the danger zone.
“It was … I can’t imagine what the roof looks like because there were some big boulders coming down,” Kelly Keffer said. “Scared us both.”
Thankfully the couple escaped unscathed.
Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane Thursday night. As it made its way inland, the storm brought historic rainfall and catastrophic flooding to the Southeast.
