ROANOKE, Va. – A 4,000 strong workforce continues to restore service to Appalachian Power’s customers in the two Virginias after being slammed by Hurricane Helene at the end of last week.

As of today, workers have restored power to more than 60 percent, or 170,400 customers, since the peak of 282,000 on Friday.

About 83,000 of the remaining affected customers are in Virginia, with more than 25,000 customers without service in West Virginia and about 3,600 in Tennessee.

However, AEP reports that most customers in West Virginia should see power restored by 11 p.m. tonight with some of the hardest hit by Tuesday.

With more than 50 percent of assessment completed, crews face 1,900 spans of fallen wire and damaged equipment, including 450 damaged poles, 275 crossarms and 110 transformers.

Mutual aid crews from 21 states were called in to assist, from as far away as Wisconsin.
