RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) – A star player and leader of North Carolina State University’s football team is doing his part to lend a helping hand to those affected by the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene.
Defensive end Davin Vann, a native of Cary, is leading an effort to collect relief supplies that will be delivered to western North Carolina.
NC State said that Vann went to head coach Dave Doeren on Monday, asking if he could spearhead the effort. Vann offered to haul the supplies in a truck owned by his family’s Raleigh-area moving company.
In a story published by ESPN, Vann said he and his mother came up with the idea after talking about the storm damage over the weekend.
“We just came up with the idea of filling up a box truck and getting supplies out there,” Vann said in the story. “It might not do much, but it’s something that we felt like we could do.”
NC State said the community can drop off donations at the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility outside of Carter-Finley Stadium through Wednesday. Dropoff times for Tuesday and Wednesday run from 12-8 p.m.
Supplies needed include the following:
- Cases of water and any type of electrolyte drinks
- Premixed baby formula
- Baby wipes
- Hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hand sanitizer, feminine products)
- Diapers
- Shampoo/body wash
- Flashlights/lanterns
- Batteries
- Blankets/sleeping bags
- Shelf stable food
- Pop-top canned goods
Once supplies are collected, they will be driven from NC State to the Durham Rescue Mission. From there, they will be delivered throughout the western part of the state.
Vann is one of four team captains for the Wolfpack. Each of the past two seasons, Vann was awarded the No. 1 jersey, which is given to a NC State player who exhibits an elite work ethic while also serving as a leader.
Just a short walk away, the Carolina Hurricanes are also doing their part to help their fellow North Carolinians. All ticket revenue from Wednesday’s game at Lenovo Center, which sits on the same complex as NC State’s practice facility, will go toward relief efforts.
