WHITESBURG, Ky. (WKYT) – A Kentucky sheriff accused of killing a judge is leaving his office.

In a statement from his attorney, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Mickey Stines decided to retire effective Monday.

Stines is accused of killing Circuit Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers.

In his arraignment last Wednesday, Stines pleaded not guilty to Mullins’ murder.

Governor Beshear called on Stines to resign in a letter last week.

Stines is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a preliminary hearing. That will take place at the Morgan County Judicial Center.
