Dusting is essential to home cleaning. Regularly performing this task can help mitigate allergy symptoms and maintain your furniture and gadgets in prime working order.

Yet despite consistent dusting, surfaces often seem to attract dust at an alarming rate soon after a clean. The reason? You might be approaching the chore incorrectly.

Mary Futher, widely recognized online as Madame Sweat and famed for her cleaning and personal hygiene advice, covering everything from body odour solutions to battling bathroom vermin, has stepped up on Instagram to provide followers with a golden nugget of wisdom that could revolutionise their battle against persistent surface dust.

In her latest viral video, which has amassed over 6,400 thumbs-up, she reveals: “Use a tactic that you only have to dust your home once a month. You want to mix in a spray bottle, vinegar, and water.”

She continues: “Then you add olive oil that actually helps repel the dust. Spray this mixture wherever you get dust. You’ll find that you’ll only have to dust once a month.”

The recipe she uses includes 1/2 cup of white vinegar, two cups of warm water, and 1/4 cup of extra-virgin olive oil. You just pour everything into a spray bottle and shake it up until it’s mixed, according to the Martha Stewart website.

In her Instagram caption, she hailed it as a “must know dusting hack”, which garnered agreement from her followers. One fan commented: “Thank you for this! I can see this working great kinda like micellar water on skin.” Another chimed in with: “It works, no question.”

Meanwhile, a different user shared their experience: “It’s true because I’ve been doing this now for five years now and I just hit my room with the solution once a month.”
