BECKLEY, W.Va. – New River Gorge National Park and Preserve announced a road closure starting on November 1 for an improvement project.

According to a press release, the Park will be working with the Federal Highway Administration as they work on Cunard Road, also known as Route 9, beginning on Nov. 1. The project will require a full closure of the road and river access until the estimated completion date of March 31, 2025.

The closure starts past the parking lot for the Brooklyn Mine Trail and extend to the river access at Cunard and over to Angler’s Access and Brooklyn Campground. The Brooklyn Mine Trail and Kaymoor Trail will stay open, and the Park said to watch out for heavy equipment in the area.

The project is focused on road and drainage repairs, and aims to make the new road stronger and more stable to better handle bad weather and heavy use. The Park said people traveling on Routes 9, 14, 16, and 41 will see an increase in dump truck traffic during construction.

The Park also said all restroom facilities at Cunard and the Brooklyn Campground will be closed during the project. Bike and foot traffic are prohibited beyond the end of Southside Junction Trail, and the Brooklyn Campground will be closed.

All river access points at Cunard, Brooklyn, and Angler’s Access will be closed.
