Education inspectors have written to families with the results of their latest visit to a primary school and nursery in Coatbridge that no follow-up action will be required.

Watchdog Education Scotland has contacted parents and carers of children who attend Old Monkland Primary and Nursery with the findings from inspections carried out in June.

They commended the head teacher for providing “strong and compassionate” support to staff and the school community, especially as the school has recently seen various changes.

The children were described as polite and well-behaved and engaging well in their learning, while those in the nursery were enjoying their experiences and developing friendships.

The inspectors also found the environment within both the school and nursery to be nurturing, and promoting positive attitudes towards learning as well as strong relationships between pupils and staff.

Areas of improvement were also identified and discussed with the head teacher and North Lanarkshire Council.

These included a more responsive approach to nursery children’s interests, improvements in measuring the children’s progress, and to continue embedding systems providing more detailed monitoring of progress in both the nursery and primary school.

Overall the nursery was awarded a grade of “satisfactory” in all four categories while the nursery was also rated “adequate” across the board by the Care Inspectorate.

While Education Scotland does not believe further visits in relation to this inspection will be needed, the Care Inspectorate has not yet ruled out the possibility of further checks to ensure recommendations on staff training and safety monitoring are implemented.
