An East Kilbride road was closed during rush hour this morning following a crash on the A726.

Lanarkshire Live understands a car collided with a stationary van at the Glasgow Southern Orbital between Newton Mearns and East Kilbride shortly before 9am.

The EK-bound road was closed by police at the Belle Craig Roundabout reportedly causing major tailbacks in Eaglesham and Waterfoot for up to 40 minutes.

An eye-witness told us: “It looked like a few vehicles had been involved, they were parked on the verge around the van which had gone down the embankment. There was a family on the verge with children and a pram.

“There was a large number of police cars, fire engines and ambulances trying to get to it, with vehicles pulling to the side on both carriageways to allow emergency vehicles to get through.

“Two police vehicles were parked across the carriageway at the scene of accident to stop traffic moving by.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.55am on Thursday, October 3 we received a report of a crash involving a car and a stationary van on the A726 between Newton Mearns and East Kilbride.

“Emergency services are in attendance and recovery has been arranged.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service was contacted for comment.
