If you’re expecting a wee one this year, you might be pondering over what name to give them
A great starting point for some inspiration is to peruse the annual list of most popular names. Thanks to pop culture influences like films, music and other trends, fresh names emerge regularly – meaning others can quickly become unpopular.
The baby name gurus at BabyCentre have analysed the data from 2022-23 and pinpointed the names that have seen the biggest drop in popularity, putting them in danger of becoming obsolete this year.
Some of these names were once incredibly common, but shifting trends mean they’re not chosen as frequently anymore, replaced by newer options, reports the Express.
When it comes to boys’ names, it appears that American ones are losing favour the most – with names such as Keanu, Ryder and Buddy all experiencing a decline in popularity.
Additionally, Welsh boys’ names like Griff and Bowen have also taken a hit, with the trend of using surnames as first names becoming less popular in recent years.
As for girls’ names on the brink of extinction, it seems that unusual spellings are being phased out. For instance, Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse all lost popularity in 2023, so they could dip even further this year.
While certain vintage names for girls were very popular last year, such as Ivy and Ada, some other choices – like Flo, Vivienne and Peggy – weren’t as favoured last year.
Here’s a rundown of the top 20 most endangered name choices for babies this year.
