A legendary pie shop in the north of England is set to close this weekend after more than 50 years of serving customers.

Potts Pies in Lancaster will serve its last pie tomorrow having first opened its doors in 1973.

The shop’s owner Donna Crossley, who began working for Potts Pies in 1992, wrote on Facebook: ‘I did not ever think I’d be writing this, but it’s time to hang my apron up.

‘I would like to thank each and every one of you, it’s had its ups and downs mainly ups.

‘It’s not been easy over the last few years as some of you know. I will leave here with my head held high and be proud of what I’ve done.’

Customers in Lancaster were quick to express their love for Donna’s pies in the comments.

‘End of an era, lots of amazing memories and generations of workers and customers,’ wrote Russell Walsh.

‘Potts Pies will always have a place in my heart, my grandad used to work there years ago,’ added Lisa Dale.

Potts Pies was first launched by Joe and Vena Potts in 1973 before being bought by the Walsh family in 1988. Donna took over the pie shop in 2018 having been an employee for more than 20 years.

Donna said the highlight of her time at the shop was when the Hairy Bikers paid her a visit at as part of their TV show.

At one point, Potts Pies had shops in Morecambe, Bare, Toorisholme and Bolton le-Sands as well as the original store in Bowerham, Lanccaster.

In recent years, however, the shop struggled and only employed two members of staff who made pies just two days a week.

The shop’s lease has been sold, but there is not yet any information on what the new owner plans to do with the shop.
