LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD/Gray news) – A manhunt is underway for the suspect accused of shooting a police chief in Texas.

The Texas Rangers, along with several local law enforcement agencies, are looking for 33-year-old Seth Altman.

Altman is accused of shooting Memphis Police Chief Rex Plant late Thursday night.

Investigators reported Plant and another officer were serving an arrest warrant for a burglary when Altman ran out the back door. He then opened fire, striking the police chief, and fled the scene.

Plant was taken to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he remains in stable condition.

A warrant has been issued for Altman, accusing him of attempted capital murder.

Altman is described as 6 feet and 2 inches tall and weighs about 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and jeans.

Officials say he is believed to be armed and dangerous. Anyone who comes into contact with Altman is advised to not approach him and to call 911 immediately.

Memphis is in the southeastern Texas Panhandle, about 130 miles northeast of Lubbock and 275 miles northwest of Dallas. It has a population of about 2,000.
