If you can’t figure out whether you prefer whisky or rum, have you ever thought about what something between the two might taste like? That’s pretty much what’s offered in The Glenlivet’s genius single malt, which has all the richness of a whisky, with the tropical finish of a rum.

That’s because the whisky is finished in barrels that previously held Caribbean rum, imparting interesting notes of ripe bananas on top of the caramel toffee flavours you might be more familiar with. You can pick your poison with this one – enjoying it neat or on the rocks, to really soak up those flavours, or mixing it into a refreshing long drink.

In fact, you can make a delicious cocktail with just a few extra ingredients. To whip up a ‘Coco Breeze’, all you have to do is pour 50ml of the whisky and 100ml coconut water over ice, and garnish with orange peel and a slice of lime.

Intrigued? Well with the unusual tipple currently 40% off in a pre-Amazon Prime Day deal that takes it down to £25 a bottle, now is the perfect time to give it a try.

With 2,768 global ratings on Amazon, happy shoppers have awarded the whisky 4.7 stars out of 5. “Really great tasting whisky, purchased many times before. It is smooth with a wonderful after taste, it’s NOT smoky (thankfully) and well worth the money (especially when it’s on offer!),” one reviewer wrote – which suggests it’s a good entry-point for those who don’t like their whiskies overly smoky.

“It’s very nice tasting and you don’t need to add a mixer,” another wrote. While a third review read: “What a lovely drop of whisky – a true blend of whisky finished in a rum cask is a blenders triumph is your surprise, the result is an exceptional single malt whisky with the traditional smooth, honeyed character of Glenlivet married with notes of toffee and a hint of fruit, with a warm, lingering finish.”

However, not everyone was sold by the flavour profile. “Easy to drink but tropical flavours like toasted banana are too subtle to notice. Was hoping for a punchier, sweeter expression,” one shopper wrote.

Another said: “Not sure what I expected – I like whisky and I like rum but I didn’t enjoy this as much as I’d hoped I would. Just personal preference.” Your tipple if choice is a very personal thing – but luckily there are plenty of other options out there to try out.

If you like your whiskies on the sweeter side, you could try the Tobermory 12 Year Old Single Malt, which costs £42 from The Whisky Shop. Or maybe you don’t want whisky at all – in that case, you can never go wrong with Kraken’s Black Roast Coffee Rum, which costs £29.95 from Secret Bottle Shop.
