A six-year-old girl has been treated in hospital after being bitten by a Japanese Akita dog in West Sussex.

The attack happened in Worthing late afternoon Thursday when the young girl was walking with her grandmother.

A Sussex Police spokesman said that a 53-year-old woman from Worthing had been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control and causing injury.

He said: ‘Police are appealing for witnesses after a child was bitten by a dog in Durrington.

‘The six-year-old girl was walking with her grandmother when the incident occurred. She sustained a chest wound and was taken to hospital for treatment.

‘The dog, identified as a Japanese Akita, was seized by police. Its owner, a 53-year-old woman from Worthing, was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control and causing injury.

‘She has been released on bail until January 4, pending further inquiries.’
