BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Inaugural Beaver Classic Marching Band Competition was held in Bluefield at Mitchell Stadium Saturday.

The competition is part of the Governor’s Cup that is a state-run tournament by the Department of Arts, Cultures and History, where they help fund bands across the state.

Bands competed for cash prizes to help throughout the marching band season.

Fourteen bands from across the two Virginia’s preformed at this historic competition.

All bands were judged on their music, marching, special effects, and overall performance.

Bluefield Band director Nick Hinkle says events like this makes a positive impact on the community and the students.

“It’s important to bring a band competition to Bluefield because of what a massive effect it has on the community,” said Hinkle. “The visitors from outside coming in, the impact our students see that people come out to see them. Not just my students at Bluefield High School, but the students from all across these two states that get to come and perform and put on something that’s really meaningful to an audience.”

There is also another band competition happening in Mercer County call the Southern Thunder. That competition started this afternoon at Princeton Senior High School and is still ongoing.
