Everton fans have taken great pleasure in mocking Anthony Gordon after the winger’s crucial missed penalty for Newcastle – and the club’s official X account even joined the fun this morning.

Gordon had a golden chance to give Newcastle the lead against his former team after James Tarkowski hauled Sandro Tonali down at a corner towards the end of the first half.

The 23-year-old England international had been taunted by Everton supporters from minute one and the roof came off Goodison Park as Jordan Pickford leapt to his left to deny his ex-team-mate.

‘I’ve never seen a reaction in a football stadium to a penalty miss than this!’ Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports’ commentary of the Premier League clash.

‘It’s like Everton have scored a last-minute winner.’

Gordon squandered another huge opportunity in the dying moments on Merseyside and the forward looked crestfallen at the final whistle as the Magpies missed out on the chance to move into the top four.

The result means Everton remain just two points above the relegation zone after seven games but Gordon’s missed spot-kick has at least given the Toffees’ long-suffering fans something to cheer about.

Shortly after the match, X user @GoTheGameDontI said he wished Everton had blasted the same buzzer they use with fans at half-time when Gordon’s penalty was saved by Pickford.

Everton’s admin on X, formerly Twitter, clearly woke up and chose violence this morning and made @GoTheGameDontI’s dreams come true – adding the comical noise to a clip of the moment.

The video has already racked up over 400 reposts and 1,500 likes at the time of writing.

Gordon took full responsibility for Newcastle dropping points and thanked the Toon’s travelling fans for their support in a short message on Instagram.

‘A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me,’ he wrote.

‘Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team.

‘Thanks to everyone that travelled – till next time.’

Newcastle are now without a victory in three matches in the Premier League andwill look to return to winning ways at home to Brighton next weekend.

Eddie Howe’s men then do battle with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the league before facing the Blues just three days later in Carabao Cup.
