A 16 year old lad has tragically lost his life following a motorbike smash in County Durham. The youngster was riding the bike with another teen when the fatal collision occurred on Park Road, Stanley, just after 8pm on Saturday.

The crash involved a taxi and both lads from the bike were rushed to hospital. Heartbreakingly, the young biker was pronounced dead upon arrival at Newcastle RVI.

His mate, another 16 year old lad, suffered serious injuries and is still in hospital. The cabbie is thought to have escaped unscathed.

Durham Constabulary has launched an investigation and is now appealing for information. A statement from the force read: “Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision in Stanley yesterday (October 5). Officers were called to the incident involving a taxi and a motorbike in Park Road, just after 8pm.”

“The motorbike rider and passenger suffered serious injuries and were both taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. Sadly the driver of the motorbike, a 16 year old boy, was declared deceased on arrival. His family have been informed.”, reports Chronicle Live.

“The passenger, a 16-year-old boy, remains in hospital. The taxi driver is not believed to have been injured. The road was closed for several hours and reopened in the early hours of this morning. An investigation is ongoing and officers want to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene, particularly those who gave initial first aid.”

The North East Ambulance Service sent out three paramedic teams, a doctor, a rapid response paramedic, a hazardous area response team (HART) and an officer to the scene before those involved were transported to the RVI. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to get in touch with the Serious Collision Investigation unit via their email [email protected] or call 101 quoting incident number 347 of October 5.
