Many are convinced they could outdo a champion speed eater in a childhood challenge, but it’s harder than it seems.

Mike Jack has now set the Guinness World Record for the quickest time to drink a Capri Sun using a paper straw. Despite previous attempts by many, including Mike, the record had remained unclaimed until his recent success. During a visit to the Guinness World Record offices in London, the Canadian finally triumphed, securing the title with a swift 21.71 seconds.

The record for drinking a Capri Sun – the standard version with a plastic straw – stands at a mere 8.02 seconds, held by India’s Fayis Nazer. “That just goes to show the difference in difficulty the paper straw creates,” commented a Guinness World Records spokesperson.

Mike had to beat 22 seconds without spilling any drink or leaving more than half a teaspoon of liquid in the pouch, otherwise he’d face disqualification. His initial attempt, which was broadcast on the Guinness World Records YouTube channel, saw him drop the straw in haste.

Subsequent attempts were marred by excess liquid and slow straw insertion, but on his fourth go, Mike clinched the record.

Mike, set a new world record by drinking a Capri Sun in a mere 22 seconds. He expressed his relief and credited the win to his wife Jamie’s technique saying: “Her technique got it for us. Do a little extra blow to get some more air in there, get all the liquid out of the creases and then suck it in. That’s what did it.”

However, some enthusiasts reckon they could easily topple Mike’s time, with one commenting: “22 seconds seems easy to beat.” Another said: “I think I beat that a few years ago. We always tried the fastest time back in school.”

Others were less impressed with these types of records. One person remarked: “Guinness World Records used to be like fastest human and actually impressive stuff but now it’s stuff that’s only a record because it’s the first time someone attempts it.”

Guinness World Records defended their decision, saying: “Lots of people have attempted this and of course we still monitor all the other stuff too, we just do fun stuff like this from time to time.”

Some criticism continued unabated, with comments like: “This isn’t it, Guinness,” and “This is not impressive. We all have done that faster than this dude on a hot summer day at the pool.”

“22 seconds seems easy to beat,” one claimed.” One other commented: “22 seconds? I think I beat that a few years ago. We always tried the fastest time back in school.” “I’m going to head out and buy bare Capri Suns now,” said another.

“He wasn’t even that fast,” commented one observer. But another said they found it “impressive”. Moreover, a different viewer admitted: “This is tougher than I expected!”
