ASTORIA, NY. -A Summers County native is being honored by the government, the Greek government that is.
Sylva Matthews-Burwell, a Hinton native, was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix, one of Greece’s highest honors.
The Prime Minister of Greece presented Matthews-Burwell and two other prominent Greek Americans during a reception in Astoria, New York back on September 24.
Graduating from Hinton High School in 1983, she also graduated from Harvard and Oxford.
Matthews-Burwell held prominent positions in the Clinton and Obama Administrations, and just recently stepped down as President of American University.
