Meghan Markle’s stance on royal titles for her children, Archie and Lilibet, has reportedly shifted after conversations with Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, according to royal expert Neil Sean.

Initially, the Duchess of Sussex had downplayed the significance of titles, stating in her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey that she didn’t have any “attachment” to the “grandeur” of royal life. At that time, her children were styled as Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, reflecting Meghan’s initial views on royal status.

However, in March 2023, it was announced that Archie and Lilibet would be known as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex. This change was in line with the 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V, which grants princely titles to grandchildren of the monarch. After King Charles III ascended to the throne, Archie and Lilibet became eligible for these titles.

Neil Sean has speculated that this shift in Meghan’s perspective came after discussions with Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who, despite not being working royals, retained their titles. Sean suggested that Meghan realized how “useful a title can be” after growing close to the princesses. “

After much deliberation, Meghan decided that the titles would be a good thing, not just for her but for both her children too,” Sean said, adding that the Duchess became aware of how titles could open doors, especially in social circles.

Despite stepping down from royal duties and losing the right to use their HRH status, Meghan and Prince Harry have held on to their Duke and Duchess titles.

Sean emphasised that they are “very, very keen to cling onto those royal titles.” Meghan’s realisation, he claims, was driven by a desire to ensure her children would benefit from their royal connections.

The children’s relationship with their grandfather, King Charles, has also been a subject of debate.

Royal expert Robert Jobson noted that King Charles has not had much opportunity to develop a bond with Archie and Lilibet, saying, “There is really no relationship between the King and his grandchildren because he hasn’t had the opportunity to forge that relationship.”

Ultimately, it seems Meghan’s shift in attitude toward royal titles was influenced by her royal connections, particularly Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who also benefited from their father, Prince Andrew, advocating for their titles.
