BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office said they are investigating a situation that caused one injury in Greenbrier County.

According to the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 6, Captain J. J. Martin responded to a 911 call to meet EMS at the Shell gas station at the Sam Black Church exit off I-64. The Sheriff’s Office said initially a person was complaining of abdominal pain and was being transported by a personal vehicle to meet the EMS unit. Later information revealed that the person may have been impaled by something, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When the person arrived at the station, they told Captain Martin that he was riding a 4-Wheeler and was in an accident. The man told police that he was impaled by a stick or some other object, but the Sheriff’s Office said Martin noted the injuries didn’t match what the man told Martin. The injured man was then taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The Sheriff’s Office said they talked with a second person, and that they confirmed the accident and agreed to show police where it happened. When they arrived at the reported crash site, the Sheriff’s Office said they did not see any evidence of an accident.

The Sheriff’s Office then interviewed the person again, and said it was revealed that the injured man was using some form of explosive device and it accidentally blew up.

The officers were able to find the site of the explosion and said there was evidence that matched the second story.

Additional units, including from the West Virginia State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit, arrived at the scene and worked to make sure the area was safe and no one else could get hurt.

The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is still under investigation.
