As much as we love our dogs, it’s no secret that they can get a little mucky.

Especially during this time of year – from the wet winter walks to the endless temptation to get covered in mud, our pets can be a messy sometimes. But it turns out you don’t need to wash them as much as you may think.

Amir Anwary, known as amirthevet on TikTok, is a vet renowned for sharing handy pet advice on social media. Recently he revealed just how often your dog needs a dip in the tub to stay clean.

When talking about how much people should bathe their dogs, he said: “At least once every three months. Ideally you would bath them once a month. Avoid bathing them every single week – this can strip essential oils from their skin (unless told otherwise).”

In the video’s caption, he admitted most people don’t realise how often they should bathe their dogs, and the answer does vary. Even so, for most pooches, it seems they don’t need to have a good wash as much as you think.

Since the video was shared, it’s been liked more than 2,000 times, and people were quick to comment too. It’s clear that some fill up the tub for their pets more than others.

One person said: “I bathe all my dogs every two to three weeks.” Another wrote: “Mine gets a bath once a month. I will only bath her more than once a month if she gets sick, dirty or really stinks.”

A third replied: “I bathe my Yorkie weekly – he gets dirty.” Meanwhile, someone else had a different take, writing: “Dude, must not see a lot of show dogs. We have a bath weekly, and their skin is perfect.”

Amir clarified that it’s fine for your dog to have weekly a bath, as long as you use a hydrating shampoo. And he’s not the only expert to make this claim.

According to PetPlan, washing your dog at least once every three months is a good rule to follow. However, once a month or once a week is fine, permitting they actually need a bath.

The need to wash them more regularly all depends on the breed of dog, their activity levels and the environment they’ve been in. Take these factors into account before hitting the tub.
