In Scotland, it’s common to pay around £5 for a pint of beer.

A study released in April 2024, showed the average price of a pint of lager in Scotland is £4.87. This is an increase from previous years.

Back in 2023, the average price of a pint across the UK was found to be £4.21. This is up 1.6% from the 2022 average of £4.15 and a rise of over 8% from the 2021 nationwide average of £3.89.

In stark contrast, there are parts of the world you can get a beer for less than a quid. And one TikToker recently revealed where you can find some of the most affordable booze out there.

Louie – AKA @louiecarabott when he’s posting online – recently visited a venue where you can get “17 beers for the price of one”. He claims these are “the cheapest beers in the world,” so it’d be rude not to order one!

In his viral video, he gestured towards his bev and said: “I’ve got one here, it cost me 40p, so I thought why not buy two. Tastes pretty decent to be fair.

“You could literally have ten of them and not spend over £5. It’s mad cheap. In London, you’d be paying £7 a beer, it’s crazy. Out here, it’s 40p. It’s worth just getting the flight for the beer.

“Cost of living out here in south east Asia is crazy. I’ve just had a bill it cost me £2, the room I’m staying in is costing me £10 a night, like, the motorbike I’m renting is £3 a day. I literally spend no money down here.”

People couldn’t believe their ears after watching the clip. One asked: “Did you just say 40p for a beer?” And another joked: “Double up on them.”

So why does beer cost so little in Vietnam? Many of them are produced locally, which reduces import taxes and transportation costs.

Local ingredients and labour are also generally cheaper, contributing to lower production costs. And one of the firm favourites among tourists and locals alike is Bia Hoi.

It is a type of draft beer that is brewed daily and consumed on the same day. It’s often served in small, local establishments and is extremely cheap due to its quick turnover, lack of packaging, and minimal production costs.

Even though the country’s government has been considering increases in taxes, Vietnam traditionally has lower taxes on alcohol compared to many other countries. This can make beer more affordable.
