An inquiry into the death of head-in-a-bag killer Alan Cameron is set to take place later this year, it has been confirmed. The 68-year-old died in Saughton Prison in Edinburgh on 1 November 2022 after becoming ill.
Cameron was found guilty of murdering his ex-model fiancee, Heather Stacey and hiding her corpse for a year, then dumping her body parts in a bin liner in June 2010 and sentenced to life behind bars. The convicted paedophile had been dating Heather for less than six months when he killed the mum-of-four in her flat in Granton, Edinburgh, in November or December 2007.
He then hid Heather’s body for more than a year in the flat and dismembered her, wrapped the parts in bin liners and an Ikea bag and dumped them near the Spar shop where he worked on Lindsay Road. A Preliminary Hearing will be held on November 19 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court into the brute’s death.
Dog walker Anita Anderson, 41, and boyfriend Jem Kitchen, 47, came across Heather’s head wrapped in a bin liner and dumped on on the city’s Hawthornvale Path on Hogmanay morning 2008. The grim discovery sparked a massive murder investigation.
Other bags were found within days, and Cameron was arrested on January 8, 2009.
The inquiry into the evil killer’s death is mandatory by law. It will look into the cause of death and the circumstances in which it occurred and will establish whether any reasonable precautions could have been taken to prevent the death.
It aims to minimise the risk of deaths in the future. Fatal Accident Inquiries are used to establish facts as opposed to attributing blame to an individual or group.
Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on fatalities investigations for COPFS, said: “The Lord Advocate considers that the death of Alan Cameron occurred while in legal custody and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory. The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the Sheriff.”
