More than 20 schools in Dumfries and surrounding areas will be provided with a life-saving defibrillator after a fundraising campaign touched the hearts of people across the region.
Emma Currie launched the drive to provide primary schools with defibrillators just a few short weeks ago, and she’s been left stunned that more than £33,000 was raised in that time.
Emma, 43, kickstarted the effort 10 years after nine-year-old Heathhall pupil Emma Ross suffered a cardiac arrest in the playground.
Wee Emma died three years later aged 13, at Robin House children’s hospice in Balloch, Dunbartonshire, with her family by her side.
School janitor Emma Currie said: “Wee Emma was the main reason I had a defibrillator fitted at our school in Cargenbridge in 2017. They are vital life-saving pieces of equipment that you absolutely hope you will never have to use but you most definitely want to have at hand if you ever do need it.
“I’ve been totally overwhelmed at the support so many people have given the campaign.
“It’s thanks to them that 22 schools – Heathhall, Locharbriggs, Loreburn, St Andrews, St Michael’s, Georgetown, Noblehill, Lincluden, Laurieknowe, Calside, St Teresa’s, Brownhall, Cargenbridge, Carrutherstown, Nethermill, Carlaverock, Holywood, Dunscore, Shawhead, Collin, Lochrutton, and Duncow – will soon receive a defibrillator with a seven-year warranty, a set of pads and batteries, plus an AED prep kit.
“In our schools our children, staff, parents, contractors, visitors, family members and friends will be protected for many, many years to come.
“This has been an emotional, heartwarming, and utterly remarkable journey.
“In such a short time, we’ve achieved something monumental, and words can’t fully express my gratitude.
“To every individual, business, group, and school who supported this campaign in memory of wee Emma Ross – thank you.
“Whether you donated, shared the campaign, bought a ticket, sent a message, or offered a kind word – you made this happen.
“It’s a testament to the strength and heart of our community. The people of our wee town are truly amazing.”
Wee Emma’s mum Robyn Stewart had also backed the campaign.
Also mum to daughter Evie, she said: “Emma Currie’s campaign in Emma’s memory is brilliant, and shows she will never be forgotten. It’s great that so many people supported this, and hopefully it will prevent other families going through what we have.”
