Coatbridge music club 50rpm has been nominated by the public for Live Music Venue of the Year at the Scottish Live Music Awards.

The group, which runs shows in the town’s Georgian Hotel, is in esteemed company as it’s on a long list for public votes alongside the likes of The Barras, St Luke’s and King Tuts.

50rpm was set up in 2019 as a not-for-profit community music group to bring live music and comedy to the area, and operates as a co-operative run by its members.

Responding to the club’s nomination, the group’s Iain Strefford told Lanarkshire Live: “It is already a win for us that so many people nominated us that we made it on the long list.

“The group is absolutely delighted and will be grateful for each and every vote we receive.

“We run all our shows at The Georgian Hotel in Coatbridge, and simply wouldn’t be able to do what we do without members’ help.

“We have 50 members who pay an annual fee and, in return, get entry to all the gigs we put on.

“We also make tickets available for the public to buy for each gig, and have a no talking policy when acts are playing.

“This has won us a loyal base of music lovers and musicians that see 50rpm as a music venue for music lovers.

“We bring a mix of well-known and up and coming acts to play, including Tom Robinson, JJ Gilmour, Richard Jobson (The Skids), Martin Metcalfe (Goodbye Mr MacKenzie) and Catfish Keith, and the feedback from acts is always positive.”

Iain added: “We have a very special evening on October 27 with a one-off show by Kevin Armstrong.

“Kevin hold legendary status within the music world having been David Bowie’s long time band leader.

“Kevin put together Bowie’s band for Live Aid and played guitar at the show, and he is Iggy Pop’s band leader.

“Kevin has also toured with, written for, played guitar with or produced for Paul MacCartney Sinead O’Connor, Roy Orbison, Grace Jones, Morrissey, Sandy Shaw, Thomas Dolby and Mick Jagger.”
