The eagerly awaited second season of the political thriller series The Diplomat is set to return to Netflix, with fans gearing up for its Halloween release.

The first season followed the story of Kate Wyler (portrayed by Keri Russell), the newly appointed US ambassador to the UK, who found herself navigating through an international crisis. Netflix has tantalised viewers with a trailer for the upcoming season, released on Tuesday.

The nearly two-minute-long teaser suggests heightened suspense as it reveals that Hal Wyler (played by Rufus Sewell), Kate’s husband, miraculously survived the car bomb explosion from the previous season’s finale, although he is now hospitalised.

Kate’s challenges are not just personal; she faces a mole within her ranks, as she discloses in the trailer: “If members of my government are involved, it could be anyone. The call is coming from inside the house and three Americans just got blown up inside the house.”

However, the excitement was somewhat dampened for fans when they discovered that the new season will only have six episodes, two fewer than the first season’s eight.

Disappointed viewers took to Reddit to air their grievances, with one commenting: “I feel like they made it 6 episodes so they could rush it out because it was unexpectedly popular.”

Another lamented the days of longer TV seasons: “TV shows used to be 22 episodes. We’re still getting ripped off.” While another simply stated: “Cool. Although a 6 episode season is bulls**t, it should be 10.”

One viewer expressed frustration, commenting: “This is one of the only good shows they have, 6 episodes is completely BS, I’m not even asking for 10, just keep it at like 8 like the 1st season.”

Another chimed in with dissatisfaction: “I mean, I would prefer 16 episodes but Netflix doesn’t like to do reasonable length seasons.”

The acclaimed series made its debut on Netflix in April 2023 and within a month’s time, it saw renewal for a follow-up season, reports the Express.

It garnered widespread critical praise, and Keri received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Furthermore, she clinched the Best Actress award in a Streaming Series, Drama category during the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards.

The Diplomat season two premieres on Netflix on October 31.
