More than 550 visitors attended this year’s popular annual speedway day at Summerlee heritage museum in Coatbridge.

They were treated to a vintage display of 14 different bikes including Weslakes and Jawa models, uprights and laydowns provided by former riders Ronnie Anderson, Brian Collins, James Culbert, William Richardson and Alex Weir.

A host of speedway stars were in attendance, with the Coatbridge Tigers team of the 1970s well represented by members including Jim Beaton, Brian Collins, Harry McLean and Benny Rourke, along with former Berwick rider Andy Meldrum and Stuart Coleman, of Glasgow Tigers.

Organisers from the busy Speedway Memories group based at the Coatbridge attraction arranged an impressive memorabilia display for visitors to enjoy as they tracked back in time to recall the sport’s Lanarkshire era with regular race meetings taking place at Cliftonhill stadium in Coatbridge as well as in Blantyre and Motherwell.

The items on show to bring back memories included race jackets, programmes, badges and old photos, while race footage was shown on the venue’s big screens.

Now fans are already planning for next year’s edition of the now firmly-established annual event, which follows the success of their monthly memories group meetings and their successful Cinder Kings exhibition which previously went on display at both Summerlee and North Lanarkshire heritage centre.

Event organiser John Houston said: “People enjoyed all the memorabilia on show as it brought back good memories – a good day was had by all and we hope to see everyone back next year.”

John thanked Summerlee development officer David McDonald and manager Lu McNair for their help in arranging this year’s successful event.
