Parts of Scotland are predicted to be hit by snow this weekend as temperatures go below freezing.
Weather maps highlight the small regions likely to experience a layer of snow by approximately 6am on Sunday, including the Scottish Highlands and parts of the Lake District. Higher terrain will be susceptible to wintry conditions, with temperatures in these areas anticipated to plummet to as low as -2 on Sunday morning.
The decrease in temperatures is largely attributed to an icy northerly wind, which will bring colder Arctic air down. However, forecasters predict that a new Jetstream arriving later next week will abruptly end the cold snap.
Sunday’s chill will result in light snow flurries across the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District and the Outer Hebrides. Disruption is, however, highly unlikely, reports the Mirror.
The UK will experience cold temperatures on Sunday with 3C forecast in Birmingham at 6am, and 5C forecast in London. As the day progresses, it will warm up slightly – to around 8C in Birmingham and 10C in London.
Temperatures are expected to reach 7C in Belfast and 11C in Bristol by the afternoon.
Rain is expected to sweep in from the west, making landfall across Northern Ireland by approximately 4pm. It’ll then move westward, reaching parts of Scotland by around 7pm.
Merseyside and the surrounding area can expect showers throughout Sunday evening.
According to the Met Office, “Sunday and Monday should remain bright for most, though a few showers are possible.”
In its forecast looking ahead from Tuesday October 15 to Thursday October 24, the Met Office highlights that: “With winds from a southerly direction at first, temperatures will likely trend above average, with some warm conditions possible at times, but perhaps returning closer to average later in the week as winds become turn more toward the west.”
This snow forecast echoes The Mirror’s report last week which suggested that several regions could expect snowfall albeit light dustings in the near future. Speaking with a meteorologist, The Mirror revealed that a small amount of snow was on the cards due, in part, to the harsh Arctic breeze.
