Paul Hilston has quit as manager of St Cuthbert Wanderers.

He took charge at St Mary’s Park in the summer, having been on the coaching staff of previous bosses Ian Clark and Josh Gardner.

However, he stood down after Saturday’s 5-2 Haig Gordon Cup defeat to Abbey Vale.

Saints chairman, Ian McIntyre, said: “He goes with the best wishes of the club, he has shown great dedication and integrity during his at the club.

“There’s no ill feeling, we’ve parted on good terms.”

Coaches Raymond Gordon, Ally McMillan and Craig Rudd have been put in charge of first team affairs, with Saints’ next game at home to Lochar Thistle on October 19.

Under Hilston, who was travelling from the central belt to Kirkcudbright for training and matches, Saints picked up four points from their first two games.

However, their youthful squad has managed just one point since then to leave them third bottom of the South of Scotland League.

They put in a spirited display against Vale despite the scoreline.

Vale opened the scoring for Dylan Bruce only for Saints to draw level through on loan Queen of the South youngster Fraser Campbell. Darren Monteith restored Vale’s advantage but Saints were level again by the break when Campbell netted his second.

Adam Kirk put Vale in front for a third time after the interval and this time there was no stopping them, Robbie Simpson soon doubling the lead before Sean Potts wrapped things up.

Saints’ next match is at home to Lochar Thistle on October 19, with Vale hosting Nithsdale Wanderers the same day.
