The last time Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl was back in 2019.

ATLANTA — Atlantans, get ready! The Super Bowl is coming back to the “A.”

Super Bowl LXII will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2028, the league announced Tuesday.

“The Super Bowl is an event that transcends sports, and I can’t wait to see it back here in our city,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said. “As an Atlanta native, I vividly remember how that first Atlanta Super Bowl showcased our community and helped further propel us forward as the sports capital of the country. We have raised the bar with each subsequent game, and I look forward to outdoing ourselves in 2028.”

NFL owners were in the city Tuesday for their fall league meeting, where they voted for future host cities.

“This is a tremendous honor for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia to be selected as host for Super Bowl LXII,” Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank said.  “Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl LIII in 2019.”

The Atlanta Business Chronicle previously reported that leaders intended to award Super Bowl LXII to Atlanta but that the decision was subject to input and approval by the full group of owners. The outlet also reported that sources said execs and key owners on the NFL Fan Engagement & Major Events Committee wanted to make Atlanta happen.

Further, the location wouldn’t be too much of a surprise because Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who is influential among his peers and close with Commissioner Roger Goodell, has made it known about his desire for the city to host another Super Bowl.

The last time the ATL was host city was back in 2019 with Mercedes-Benz Stadium serving as the venue for Super Bowl LIII. The city was lit with excitement for that game, with numerous events and celebrities flocking to Atlanta as the New England Patriots took on the LA Rams. The Patriots ended up beating the Rams 13-3 in that game.

Prior to 2019, the previous two Super Bowls in Atlanta took place at the now-demolished Georgia Dome for the 1993 and 1999 seasons.
